You might have noticed that we are living in a toxic modern world.

90% or more of the things in the supermarket contain at Ieast one ingredient that is toxic.

Our personal care products are loaded with oestrogen disrupting chemicals, packaged food has additives, preservatives, Tins have BPA and heavy metaIs, Fresh product unless organic is laden in pesticides and more. Environmentally we have chemicals in our drinking water, EMFS and Exhaust fumes...

Really we cannot escape this toxicity.

Most peoples systems cannot handle this overload and society is sick and suffering because of it.

A recent study has shown over 200 different chemicals in the umbilical cords of new born babies, showing that what the mother is exposed to during pregnancy and/or potentiality if she has heavy metals in her system, is getting passed onto the baby.

Let's not get depressed about it, instead lets put our focus on the solutions; clean eating, regular detoxing and supporting your local organic farmers.

Ayurveda (ancient Indian medical system) teaches us simple daily self care detoxing practices and twice yearly seasonal detoxes with Autumn and Spring.

Spring Cleansing.

Spring is when the weather starts to warm up, the Lymphatic system gets more active, toxins that have accumulated over winter start to move through the body (you can generally see a rise in allergies, iIIness, pain and inflammation in our society in spring)

The philosophy is that as the snow is melting in the colder climates in spring so is the toxic sludge in our bodies, in Ayurveda its called Ama.

Formulating your own spring cleanse.

It's important to be implementing daily practices as mentioned above, in your Ubuntu Nutritional Guidelines, or some of the recommendations bellow.

We recommend allocating a week or two to focus on clean eating, regular meaIs and implementing these seIf care practices, perhaps some of them might stay and become part of your daily self care rituals.

Detox Tips and Daily Self-Care Routines

1. Morning Tongue scraping... Yes!! Youโ€™ve read it correctly! and its been practised for thousands of years in eastern cultures as a daily detox practice. While youโ€™re asleep at night your breathing out toxins and they are accumulating on your tongue and teeth. Have you smelt a room after someone has drank alcohol or the smell of a room that a sick person has slept in?

The moment you wake up, go straight to the bathroom and spit out the saliva in your mouth its recommended to never swallow it.

Brush your teeth to remove the toxins from your teeth, then scrape your tongue with a tongue scraper (available online or your local health food shop) Notice the thick white film on your tongue? These are toxins known in Ayurveda as Ama which accumulated on your tongue from your stomach and Gi tract. Scrap your tongue 3 times down the centre, once each side and enjoy the fresher light feeling in your mouth.

2. Morning Detox Drink. After brushing and scraping, itโ€™s now time to kick start your metabolism and digestive system to eliminate toxins. 1/4 of a fresh lemon with grated skin, 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger and 1/2 teaspoon of honey. First add 1/3 of boiling water with the grated ginger then top the rest up with cold water and squeeze the lemon and add the honey. stir and enjoy. Please note that honey and lemon are affected by high heats so it is important to add them after the cold water is added.

3. Eat three light regular meals. Your digestion is strongest at lunch so it is best to eat your largest meal of the day at lunch time. Have a small breakfast/small dinner or Hemp Seed Smoothie for breakfast and or dinner.

When you overeat you create toxins in your system.. Think of how many times you have eaten and felt full? This is why your poor digestive system is struggling to produce enough digestive enzymes and digest your food, tiredness after eating is a sign of this.

Eating at regular times also allows your system to be in a cycle and your stomach enzymes will know when the food is coming and will be ready!

Your stomach is the size of your two palms put together... Eating more than this amount creates fullness and can lead to toxic overload.

4. Drink 2 Litres of room temp water with a pinch of pink salt and also 2-3 Herbal teas a day. Herbal tea is a great way to sooth the system, aid in detoxification and digestion. Drinking herbal tea after and between meals benefits the whole digestive system. We recommend teas including these herbs: Peppermint, Rooibos, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Tulsi, Dandelion root, Turmeric, Nettle, St Maryโ€™s thistle.

We also have a range of herbaI teas to support you here

5. Warm oil massage. This massage can be done 20 minutes before a shower or straight after a shower, in the morning or at night before bed. Warm black sesame oil body massage is a key in Ayurvedic medicine to release toxins from the skin, get the Lymph moving and connect and ground your body.

We aIso have a powerfuI CFC oiI caIIed foundation Bone oiI avaiIabIe to our cIients.

The oil can be warmed by a oil burner or put your oil in a small bottle and put the bottle in a cup filled with boiling water.

Directions: Start by massaging your feet โ€“ ladies left foot and leg first and men, start with your right foot. Work your way up to your legs, hips and focus on the areas with cellulite, pain or dryness. When you get the the abdomen massage anti-clockwise, up the right side, across the top and down the left. Really get into the stomach as this is where us females hold a lot of tension that can cause digestive issues. Continue upwards from your fingers, arms and shoulders. For the chest, really concentrate on massaging the breasts, between the shoulder and breast and under the arm. Massage the neck and as much of the back as possible.

6. Avoid Dairy, caffeine, gluten, sugar and reduce meat intake. As much as possible as these products are over consumed in our western modern diet , they are acidic and hard to digest which creates an overgrowth of bad bacteria, yeasts and parasites... Eek, no thank you!! Give your body a chance to detox by consuming mainly vegetables, including root vegetabIes, beetroots and greens streamed or lightly fried with ghee and spices... Warm soups, kitchari, smoothies, juices and easy to digest meals. You can find more recipes on our blog and our kick start your heaIth ebook here

Ayurveda, daily detoxing and self care is all about getting into a routine and creating new habits. Give it a try and see the benefits and difference in yourself and your health!
